Wednesday we did an exchange. Sister Jenson went up to White River (by Indy) with Sister Alex Smith. She just came back out about 3 weeks ago after some medical issues. Come to find out, she's my second cousin. And she's also from Smithfield. Crazy. Sister Rich and Sister Summers (my MTC comp) came down to Bloomington with me for the day. I was really nervous about it because yes, I am a natural leader most times, but I've taken a back seat here in Bloomington and leaned a lot on Sister Jenson since she's been here in Bloomington for 6 months and knows a lot about the people and the area. So I was nervous to have to take charge. But all went well, and it increased my confidence in my abilities. Good thing too, because it's looking like Sister Jenson will be transferred next week. We met with some less-actives to "practice our teaching" because they really don't know the gospel, but they think they do. The lesson went well. We were actually able to get some words in this time (the mom talks A LOT).
That night we visited Amy Luman. She hadn't come to church the last 2 Sundays, so we were worried about her commitment to her New Year's resolution to come to church. We had a good discussion with her about becoming rather than doing and how doing things helps us to become. She told us that she'd been studying the gospel principles book, even when she didn't make it to church, and had been studying the scriptures referenced. We also talked about scripture study and I shared my thoughts and experience with studying by topic for a whole year. It really helped me to get more out of my study and helped me connect gospel principles together. She was really excited about that and said she would try it out. She and her daughter Brittney (15, not baptized) missed sacrament meeting, but they showed up for the 2nd hour. Sweet! We told Brittney about the YW making candy on Wednesday night and asked if she'd be interested in teaching them how to make something, since she wants to be a pastry chef. She got really excited about it. She got to meet all the YW and some of the YM in our ward Sunday, so I think that will really help her desire to come to YW.
Tina has had to cancel our last three appointments due to sickness of her daughter, then herself, then her son. We're always really excited to meet with her, so it's been a disappointment each time she calls to cancel. Hopefully all will be healthy and well next Monday so we can meet with her again and instill in her the desire to come to church.
Saturday we went downtown to talk to people. We met Mike Toran at the bus stop and we talked about the BOM and asked if he'd be interested in learning more about our church. He surprisingly said he would (maybe the fact that he goes to 2 churches helped us out). We got his contact info, but he's in the elders' area. We've been giving them a lot of people to contact lately. I wish they'd return the favor. But as we were finishing talking with Mike, a man named John Puza came up to us. He asked if we had any extra pamphlets that he could have. He just moved here about a month ago from Maryville (close to Gary, Indiana) and he's trying to turn over a new leaf so to speak. We asked if he goes to a church and he said he went to a Baptist church here once because someone invited him. So we told him about our church and he sounded really interested in coming since he hadn't found a church yet. We asked for his contact info, and it seems as if he lives in our apartment complex. He was describing where it was and what it looked like and it has to be ours. But he gave us an incorrect apartment number (he said 3C, but they go from 1-30), and the number he gave us as his friend's cell phone who he's living with was also a bad number. Hmm. He didn't make it to church on Sunday morning. Sister Jenson and I both feel like he didn't purposely give us bad info, so we're praying that we'll find him again and/or that he'll come to church next week.
Take care.
